We told Zack and Tatum it would be one of those stories they could laugh about and tell for the rest of their lives…
After the wedding, Zack surprised Tatum by taking her to a little bed & breakfast in St Helens instead of sleeping in their empty apartment in Monmouth. Then in the morning, they headed down to the Big Sur in California.
On Thursday night, we got a call. The car wasn’t running right. They got it going again and we didn’t hear back for a couple of hours. So, we called them to see how it was doing. They had just gotten done eating dinner at a fancy restaurant and we on their way back to the beach house they were staying in. The car started up and everything was fine.
Then 5 minutes later, we got another call. The car completely died on the highway about 10 minutes out of town and 20 minutes from the house. At 10 o’clock at night. And his phone was dying and the chargers were back in their room.
Nothing like being stranded on the side of the road, not knowing what to do. Thankfully, our insurance has roadside assistance. So we got on the phone, found a tow company, and a garage to take the car to. They called the number and prepared to wait the hour… a few minutes later, the tow truck arrived. And rather than spending the night in a spendy hotel or in the back seat of the Escort, the couple that owned the beach house drove into town to pick them up.
The next day we got the call from the garage. Verdict: the car wasn’t worth the potential repair bill. Now we had to make a decision on how to get our honeymooners home. Trains, planes and buses were all out of the question. WAY too expensive! And no one wants to rent a car to 21-year-olds. Then there was the question of what to do with the car??? Leave it there? Scrap it? Tow it home?
We called Walt for advice. He said he would hook up his tow dolly and be ready to leave in a couple of hours. Chris and I decided to tag along and help drive. We were on the road by 4:30 Friday afternoon.
They drove straight through the night and we arrived at the honeymooners at 7:00am.
the early morning view from the house
We picked up the Escort and drove straight back home.
Thankfully, Zack was well rested and did most of the driving! And I did my best to help keep our driver awake and alert.
The newlyweds were dropped off and took off for home in our mini van. The rest of the weary travelers made our way north. We arrived back home around 1am, giving us just enough sleep for church in the morning.
The funniest part was that right after they got engaged, they knew a couple who had their parents go with them on their honeymoon. They made us promise not to go with them. We promised. Little did they know that we had our fingers crossed behind our backs… ;o)
