Despite the forecast calling for a 90% chance of rain in Haleiwa, we packed up our swimsuits, towels and snorkeling gear and drove up to the North Shore. Some of our favorite places from our last trip were there and we were wanting to go back despite the weather.
The traffic was horrible by the Dole Plantation thanks to some road construction but we eventually got through and headed to Mokule'ia Beach, the crash site in season 1 of Lost. We had to walk a bit to get there but I was so excited to recognize it!
we started here but had to walk around the point in the distance…
At the water’s edge the beach was very rocky and there was no good packed sand for walking. There was also not much cloud cover for shade, which made walking HOT!
We probably should have put on some sunscreen before leaving the car. And it was a lot further than it looked…
I loved these brightly colored beach cottages!
as we neared the point I could sense we were getting close…
nearly there…
there were skydivers from the airstrip across the street all the time
Needless to say, Chris wasn’t quite as giddy as I was and it was going to be another long walk back to the car…
Next stop: Haleiwa. But then we drove by an old sugar mill that I thought was the site of Eko’s Nigerian village from Lost. Turned out it was back by where we had just been. I was disappointed but not enough to make my poor husband drive all the way back… :o)
Haleiwa is a great little surfing town to explore and Chris was able to find a shirt to go under his wet suit for surfing.
But all that walking and exploring makes one pretty hungry. So we walked back into town to hit Mackey’s Shrimp Truck for the best garlic butter shrimp on the island!
the lemon pepper (top) was good but that garlic shrimp is the BOMB!!!
We did a bit more exploring and then realized that it seemed like the sun was going to stick around for at least a while longer and some swimming at Haleiwa Beach Park was in order…
this is supposed to be a picture of Chris snorkeling but you can’t really seem him… LOL
