Every Tuesday there is a free hula show in Waikiki at the Kuhio Beach Hula Mound. Since we still had a lot of day left, we decided to spend the evening in Waikiki…
As soon as we got into downtown Waikiki, I remembered why it is not my favorite part of visiting Oahu. There are people everywhere, the traffic and parking are horrible and there really aren’t many places to eat that are reasonable, not crowded or closed after sunset.
Sunset at Waikiki is still beautiful but much harder to get good pictures of between all of the people and cruise ships… LOL
But the hula show was very nice and since quite a few people left and didn’t stay until the end, we eventually got to sit down to watch.
The “stage” is right in front of a huge banyan tree!
The show opened with a traditional conch shell blowing…
A band played and sang Hawaiian music while several different groups came up to perform hula dances…
After the show we wandered around Waikiki a bit. The International Market has been shrunk down to nothing to make room for a new Saks Fifth Avenue. Ugh! Now the few remaining vendors are all crammed into a tiny alley. It does make it feel more international that way, but it still made us sad.
Since we couldn’t find anywhere interesting to get something light to eat (we were still stuffed from the cruise), we stopped at Zippy’s for dessert. I had a piece of chantilly cake that I am still thinking about… Mmmmm!
