Alaska - Day Twenty-Eight: 6,523.4 miles to Whitehorse, YT

Before heading out of town, we took a drive down Bonanza Creek Road.

Stopped to check out Dredge No. 4. Interesting dredge, boring name...

Before going panning at the public Claim No. 6, we stopped at Claim 33 for a lesson and a sample for comparison...

Then we joined the other "stampeders" down at the creek...

No gold, but I did find some nice rocks...

The interpretive trail at Discovery Claim National Historic Site was excellent! It is the site of the first gold claim that started the Klondike Gold Rush in 1898. We learned all kinds of things about gold mining... (including that we aren't any good at it. LOL)

The Dempster Highway was just calling our name, and I just couldn't resist. We didn't have time to do all 450 miles to Inuvik, NWT, so we had to settle for 45 miles to the Tombstone Interpretive Center instead. But at least we could say we were on the Dempster...

Just before we left, this bus pulled into the parking lot. It was from Germany and was full of German tourists. We aren't quite sure how they got the bus to Yukon, but it looked like it would be quite the adventure. The Germans really do make good stuff...

Just like the Dalton and Top of the World, the truck loved the Dempster!

On the way to Whitehorse, we stopped at Pelly Crossing viewpoint for pictures...

Then at Five Fingers Rapids Recreation Site for dinner and more pictures. But didn't have time to walk the 219 steps and 0.6 mile trail to the overlook... :(

Quick stop at Montague Roadhouse Historic Site built for the stagecoach route between Dawson City and Whitehorse...

Then a shocking thing happened. The sun started to go down. So we stopped at Fox Lake to take pictures of this new phenomenon... ;)

It was 9:50 pm when we saw the ad for "world famous cinnamon buns" at Braeburn Lodge. Miraculously they were still open! So we picked one up for breakfast in the morning...

We finally arrived at Hi Country RV Park (we liked it so much we went back) at 11pm, our latest night of driving the entire trip. We couldn't remember the last time it was so dark! Trip plans for the next day would have to wait until morning...
