North Shore - Day Two

Chris had to teach in the morning, so after he was done we headed north on Highway 61, or the North Shore Scenic Drive. God blessed us with more beautiful weather than we could have ever imagined! It was so nice we did most of our day's hiking in a t-shirt!

First stop... The highly recommended, Betty's Pies for a morning snack.

Then Gooseberry Falls State Park...

Iona's Beach Scientific & Natural Area, otherwise known as "Pink Beach" because of the pink rhyolite rocks on the shore...

Spilt Rock Lighthouse State Park. While we didn't pay to tour the lighthouse, the walk along Pebble Beach afforded some super great views...

Black Beach at Silver Bay. It's the only black "sand' beach in the lower 48 because of the taconite tailings from nearby mining. But it's really more tiny pebbles than sand...

Palisade Head is a beautiful overlook that is part of the nearby state park and a popular place for rock climbing down to the water's edge...

Tettegouche State Park's name is debated. Is it the French Canadian word for "meeting place" or the local tribal word for "squirrel"...

It was starting to get a bit late but we squeaked in one more hike to Caribou Falls before heading back to Duluth...

Unfortunately there wasn't much open by the time we made it back to town. Thankfully there was still a delicious little Mexican place right next to our hotel that was still open and was right next to a cute little cidery for a nightcap before crashing.

How do I know my husband still loves me after 33 years? We hiked a total of 12 miles, around 30,000 steps and HUNDREDS of stairs! Yes, literally! There were stairs everywhere we went! Happy Anniversary!
