Now the adventure was about to really begin!
I really wanted to see I’olani Palace! Unfortunately we didn’t have any idea of how truly far into town it was from Waikiki. But we are young and in shape and had a map. So we set out walking…
And we walked and we walked and we walked…
We walked very far from the tourist-y part of town and got to see the real Honolulu. That’s when we realized that we were not going to make it to the Palace before closing if we didn’t catch a bus.
We finally found a bus that would take us there and hopped on. We made it there just in time for the very last tour of the day! Whew!
the ticket place
the capital building
The audio tour was very good and the palace was gorgeous! And it was a good way to learn about the history of Hawaii, too!
the Grand Staircase, even the servants used it
King Kamehameha I & Queen Kalama (we visited their summer palace our first day in Hawaii)
much of the beauty was in the details
the dining room
the throne room
the library
the music room
the kitchen
the quilt the queen made while under house arrest
jewelry made tigers’ claws
One more bus ride took us back to Waikiki, dinner (pineapple pancakes, eggs, rice & Portuguese sausage at Eggs & More)and our car just 4 minutes before our meter ran out!!! That was cutting it close!
we just missed the sunset at Waikiki :o(
The big city was nice but we were glad we didn’t have to stay there! ;o)
