We celebrated my birthday a week late because spring finally arrived! So to celebrate, Chris built the shelving unit bed for the back of the van, we purchased some new bins and loaded up the camping gear and drove out to Whidbey Island.
On the way we stopped by Terramar Brewstillery in Edison. The scenery was beautiful, the ambiance was fun, beer was great and we will be back to try out the speak easy.
The first night we stayed at Deception Pass State Park. We set up camp, had curry cup noodles, walked to the beach to watch the sun set and enjoyed a campfire with some left-behind firewood, a flare (we forgot matches/lighter) and some pages from my morning journal...
As you can tell from the picture, the van was a bit off-kilter. This meant I spent most of the night trying not to roll into Chris. What you can't tell from the picture is that is was also a bit chilly that first night. The combination did not make for a good night's sleep. But the bed was comfy and I loved being able to just pack up the van and leave after breakfast!
Knowing how crazy the island would be, I did a bit of research to find some off-the-beaten-path places to explore and check out for future visits. And although I know no one reads this but me, in order to protect the said locations, I will not be saying where we visited...
#1- This will be a definite future kayaking spot! Easy place to put in and places to paddle out to and explore...
#2- This was a lovely quiet walk in the forest. But it also had a pretty steep hike down to a gorgeous sandy/rocky beach!
This sign just made us laugh...
#3- Another great future kayaking spot!
Our next stop was a nice enough hike but won't make our list of go-back-to places...
The Blue Fox Drive-In was showing the new Guardians movie along with Avatar. And while we weren't that interested in Avatar we did really want to see Guardians of the Galaxy and they let you crash in your car overnight after the movie is over. So we went early, got our perfect spot, grabbed some junk food and beers and waited for the movie to start.
Due to a lack of interest, a poor night's sleep, miles of hiking, lots of food, a couple of beers and a very late start, we didn't make it to the end of Avatar. But no worries, we just hopped into the back and went right to sleep...
