Our bodies were clearly a no-go for a second day in a row of hiking, but were totally up for a day of driving to Palm Springs and eating...
We slept in a bit, packed up our stuff and drove to the Omelet House for breakfast. We took it as a good sign that the place was good enough that people were willing to queue up for more than 25 minutes...
Irene, our waitress, (just one of the extremely friendly and attentive waitstaff) insisted on taking our picture...
The line signs didn't lie. The food (warm banana bread and a Kitchen Sink omelet with potatoes) and the service were both incredible!!! We could totally see why they were one of the oldest restaurants in Vegas!
We got off the interstate to use the bathroom only to find out we couldn't get back on and had to take the back roads through the Mohave National Preserve. But it was probably much more interesting than I-15...
The roads were a bit roller-coaster-y...
But we could see the Kelso Dunes in the distance...
Then we arrived at the Kelso Depot Visitors' Center. We were a bit disappointed it wasn't open because of renovations but we were glad to have a nice clean bathroom in the middle of nowhere...
Then it was back on the road to Palm Springs...
Dates are a thing in the area around Palm Springs, so I just had to stop at the Windmill Market in Desert Hot Springs for a date shake and some dates to bring home. It was so delicious, I will be trying to make myself one soon... 😋
Just like the Midwest has blowing and drifting snow, Palm Springs has blowing and drifting sand. I'm pretty sure our rental car got a little sandblasted... 😬
Sand and wind...
The first thing we went to see in Palm Springs was a private home/tourist attraction called Robolights. It's really just a rather eclectic and perhaps eccentric artist's home. I'm not sure how their neighbors must feel.😕
It's a bit much...
If you love mid-century architecture, Palm Springs is amazing!!! 😍
Because of my fondness for tiki bars, we had the pu-pu platter at The Tonga Hut...
Then we wandered around downtown, stopped for a flight at a local brewery and had our favorite "local" ice cream as an ice cream sandwich for dessert. And we thought we had some special and exclusive here in West Fargo... 😞
Stuffed full, we drove back the way we came to Twentynine Palms for our day at Joshua Tree National Park...
