Israel Day 5/10: Old Jericho

Jericho boasts of being the oldest city on earth.

I just thought this door was so cool!

It is the city whose walls fell when Joshua and the Israelites walked around the city and the walls fell. It is where Jesus ate with the famous little tax collector, Zacchaeus. Jericho was one of the cities where the priests and Levites who worked in the Temple lived. The road between Jerusalem and Jericho was frequented by these men and was the setting of Jesus' parable of the Good Samaritan.

It's name means "city of palms" and it was a lush oasis full of many different trees and Cleopatra desired to have it. So, Marc Antony gifted the city to her in 35 BC. Herod the Great also desired to have the city and was willing to pay half of Judea's income to lease it from her. After she died, Herod was given the city where he built his winter palace. He died there in 4 BC.

At the viewpoint, some of our group took a camel ride. I have to admit that it was a very pretty camel...

Each rider was outfitted with a headpiece before embarking on their 90-second journey in a circle around the parking lot.

We chose to spend our money on a glass of orange juice squeezed right there in front of you from cold, fresh, "best in the whole world" oranges. I think they might be right...

The rest of the day was spent at the pool. We even had dinner by the pool and went swimming after dark...
