Sioux City Iowa

Before we left we had a second breakfast as part of our Great Donut Hunt. This morning's stop was Flyboy Donuts. They had a really cute tile floor but the donuts weren't great... :/

Driving south on I29 leads right through Sioux City, Iowa, right on the Missouri River.

There are two free museums there to commemorate the Lewis and Clark expedition. This was the spot where Sergeant Charles Floyd died on the Corps of  Discovery's trip west. He was the only member of the expedition to die, probably of a  burst appendix that would have killed him even if he had the best medical care.

The first museum is onboard the Riverboat Sgt. Floyd that was one of just many boats that worked on the Missouri River. The museum teaches about riverboat history as well as the story of the Corps of Discovery.

One of the permanent exhibits is a image made of Charles Floyd using a plaster skull cast from his actual skull when his body was exhumed and moved to a memorial...

It was fun to poke around the restored river boat and even get to ring the bell in the pilot house...

The second museum, just a short walk down the river walk, is the Sioux City Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center. It is both a museum celebrating the Expedition but also a local art museum and community center. It was a very nice museum with fun interactive exhibits, a great gift shop and kind helpful volunteers.

After a lunch with mediocre food, great beer and TERRIBLE service, we drove up to the overlook where Sgt. Floyd is buried on the bluff above the river...

We were able to do all those things and still make it to Omaha early enough to eat, check out the Glen Leahy Mall at the Riverfront (actually a very large and beautiful city park) and go out for fancy ice cream...
