After a mediocre night’s sleep (at least for the grown ups), we woke up and began day two of the Great Escape!
Following breakfast, lessons and lunch we went to the historical section of the park to explore the big batteries and take a tour of Battery Mishler. Oh, and mess around a bit, too!
Our gang in the jeep
Don’t do it, Hobo!
Watch out! Hobo is behind the wheel!!!
Should we let them out??? Nah!
Barney, our awesome tour guide!
A replica of the original earthen Fort Stevens built around the time of the Civil War
Going into Battery Pratt
Elaina did a great job firing the big gun at the enemy ships at sea!
We finally get to see what is inside the mysterious Battery Mishler!
It’s a long, dark, and damp hallway…
Complete with stalactites on the ceiling
The walls are about 4-5 feet thick!
Battery Mishler is an underground battery built in 1901? and then used as a secret command center during WWII. There were only two like it in the US and this is the only one still open. The other is buried somewhere under a hotel in Texas.
This is where the big gun used to sit! Six men died here of internal bleeding when they were in the pit when the gun was fired!
Another battery at the fort
After we were done exploring, we went down to Coffenbury Lake for our next building challenge!
This time we were to build a boat that was capable of supporting our team’s army action figure!
Josh’s boat
This team even got sponsors!
Andy’s entry
The girls’ team and Captain Safety
Most of the boats did really well, but not all…
Poor Josh!
The Coke Rocket did well!
It’s a good thing Captain Safety was wearing his life vest!
We returned to camp for supper and campfire and went to bed VERY tired!!!
