Israel Day 2/7: Nazareth & Cana

From the Church of the Annunciation we wandered through a souq, or open-air market, to the Nazareth Synagogue Church.

This church was built by the Crusaders in the 12th century over what was believed to be the site of the Roman-era synagogue where Jesus stood up to read in Luke 4.

He went to Nazareth, where He had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day He went into the synagogue, as was His custom. He stood up to read, and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to Him. Unrolling it, He found the place where it is written:
18 “The Spirit of the Lord is on me,    because he has anointed me    to proclaim good news to the poor.He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners    and recovery of sight for the blind,to set the oppressed free,19     to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”
20 Then He rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on Him.21 He began by saying to them, “Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.”
22 All spoke well of Him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from His lips. “Isn’t this Joseph’s son?” they asked.
On the way back to the bus, we walked by this shop. Totally wish we could have gone in...

And this sign...

Then went to the Wedding Church in Cana, or Kafr Kanna. Very few historians believe this is the actual site of the New Testament town of Cana but it became a pilgrim site as early as the 8th century to visit the location of Jesus' first miracle: turning water into wine at a wedding.

This church is the 3rd to be built on the site and was completed in 1901. The upstairs is a chapel where weddings are popular, as seen by the dressing room for wedding parties in the courtyard...

Downstairs contains a small collection of artifacts dug up at the site and a large stone water jar used for ritual washing like the six stone jars Jesus used in the miracle.

The jars were much larger than we had imagined. Each one could hold 23-30 gallons of water...
